Ajde Treta Majka

9 Feb 2015

"Ajde treta majka" (ајде трета мајка) literary translated from Macedonian means - "let's go third mother". But in the colloquial, slang language, it has the meaning of "let's try for the final, third time". It also implicates faith that after two misses, we now know the wrongs and it's highly likely that the third time will be successful.

This is definitely the story of my poor newsletter, who suddenly decided to misbehave. But all is under control now and below you should see a beautiful email with a picture and some inspired writing.

I apologise for almost 'spamming' you.

Dear friends,

We are very happy to announce a special gig on the 20th of February in Rich Mix: Valkania plays as an opening act for Alekos Vretos.

Alekos Vretos is a Greek oudist, pianist and composer who merges jazz, Arabic, Greek and Latin music in a masterful and uplifting blend of sounds. Berklee-trained and known as ’The Jazz foreman’, “Alekos Vretos is not your average jazz musician, he has taken it personally to propagate world jazz music to everyone.” (Athens Voice).
To get familiar with the music of this original musician, best is to visit his youtube channel.

Valkania, the Balkan Rhythm'n'Blues band of London, with their pallet of instruments, languages, time-signatures and stories will be playing material from the album Roots, also introducing several new songs as well.

This concert will be a nice presentation of the beauty and magic that happens when two great musical civilisations meet: the Balkan / Near Eastern and Western. Most of the wonderful music we hear today is a result of blending of various cultures and the new sounds that emerge from that.
Both Alekos Vretos and Valkania, in their own way, are in search of those musical streams that unite and enrich us.

We hope to see you there and share with you these little precious musical streams.

Tickets: £10 in advance, and £12.50 on the door.
Time: 8pm
Address: Rich Mix Cinema and Arts Centre
35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road

September 2014

26 Aug 2014

Dear music lovers,

The 'autumn 2014' music season starts along with the school season, so here are some updates.

Emmanuel Mann joins Valkania as a bass-player, replacing Nikolay Angarev. Nikolay has been playing with us since 2012 and he has contributed enormously to the high quality of music that the band has produced, especially during the recording of the album Roots - one of the three best World Music albums, according to Indie Acoustic.

Nikolay is an accomplished bass and piano player, with a professional attitude and a great presence on stage. He felt that he wanted to pursue his own projects and we wish him success in his work.

Emmanuel lived most of his life in USA, and he arrived in UK less two years ago. He is a professional bass-player, specialising in Balkan World Fusion music, and we are glad to have him among us. Emmanuel's recordings can be heard on Myspace,

You can come and check him out live on our two gigs in September:

In the Music News sections, I would like to draw your attention to the new composition released by our friend Thierry Deneux, called Amaryllis. So good - full of French and Mediterranean nostalgia, gentleness, culture, passion and emotion. And a ring of truthfulness, which is probably Thierry's best quality, besides his voice. You can hear the song and comment on his website, ThierryDeneux.com.

Finally, guessing that most of you like Balkan music to some extend, there is a great band called Balkanoes performing at Jamboree on the 19th September 2014.

And - the Monday Greek Rebetiko sessions at SOAS re-start on the 22nd September, as a weekly event, with a relaxed atmosphere and some excellent musicianship.

Also, with Una Palliser, an excellent violin player, we will be performing several gigs at the Secret Cinema event during March 2014. Can't tell you more at the moment (as it's a secret), but if interested, you can check the website of the organisers for more details and to eventually try and resolve the secrecy:-) secretcinema.org

We played a few successful gigs in the last month. Some notable performance were at the Jamboree session, with a full house and a relaxed, homely atmosphere (valkania.com/gig/2014-02-19-jamboree) and the cultured gig at the London Theatre New Cross (valkania.com/blog/cultural-evening-london-theatre).  The links in brackets will allow you to hear some audio recordings from these concerts.

The cherry on the cake was the gig at Brixon's Hootananny. The reaction of the audience was overwhelmingly positive. We never expected to get such a good reception and create such joy with our little folky tunes, mainly in foreign (to the English ear) languages.
Didn't have time to get photos and videos online, but some of the best moments are cached by our dear friend Zlatko Andreevesvki in this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC0L60geQ5w

Hope to see you on some of our next gigs.

February 2014

9 Feb 2014

Dear family, friends and colleagues,

There are few interesting things going on related to the music activities of my band Valkania and I thought it's best to share them with a (hopefully) short email/newsletter.

Last year with Valkania we played a few venues and they all keep calling us back, and new promoters get interested as well. So we now have a few gigs lined up in London (follow the links for more info):

Wed 19 Feb, 9-11pm, Jamboree, E1W 3HB, Limehouse DLR
(our monthly residency)

*Fri 21 Feb, 8-10pm, London Theatre New Cross, SE14 6TA
(a special gig, with guest appearance of Thierry Deneux)

Fri 28 Feb, 23-24h, Hootananny Brixton, SW2 1DF
(part of a bigger event that starts 9pm and ends 3am)

Our most beautiful concert this month will be at the London Theatre New Cross, a magical little theatrical venue that is intimate and inspiring for performing and listening. Our last gig there was probably the best in 2013.

Our band starts to mature and the sound and musical quality are on the rise. If you haven't heard us live, this is a chance to do so.
If you can't come (as many of you live thousands miles away from London), you can always check photos and videos from the gigs section on our website: valkania.com/gigs. Just scroll down and pass the 'upcoming gigs', till you see the 'past gigs'.

Valkania starts to get noticed! In January 2014 I was interviewed by Ljupco Jolevski, a journalist from Radio Free Europe Macedonia. The audio and text in Macedonian, as well as an English Google translation can be heard/seen here: valkania.com/press/radio-free-europe-mk

There's a new song that I wrote recently, inspired by a poem I read from Maja Redžić, a Bosnian friend of mine who lives in the Netherlands. The name is 'U Kući Od Nota', translating as 'In The House Of [Musical) Notes': youtube.com/watch?v=qM-JS54iJJI
The poem itself represents a piece of beautiful Bosnian poetry which is certainly hard to translate, but I hope that the music will bring some of the feelings and moods expressed there.

Stay in good health, and to finish by sharing the music of fellow colleagues, here's the link to the website of Thierry Deneux: thierrydeneux.com.
Thierry is a good friend of mine but more importantly he is singer who writes his own music and has matured to a high-quality, distinctive song writing level. He sings in English and French, and his music is a melange of Mediterranean, French, Brazilian, Jazz and simply beautiful melodies and rhythms.
